Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that utilizes a hysteroscope, which is inserted through the vagina into the uterus to transmit images onto a screen for your doctor to review.

What is hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that utilizes a hysteroscope (a thin telescope lens with a light), which is inserted through the vagina into the uterus to transmit images onto a screen for your doctor to review. There are many benefits to this procedure and it can be very effective in aiding the reproductive health of women.

Why are hysteroscopes used?

Using these images collected by the hysteroscope, OB/GYNs can identify the cause of abnormal/irregular uterine bleeding.* A hysteroscopy also allows doctors to:

  • Diagnose the cause of repeated miscarriages (more than two in a row)
  • Perform sterilization, commonly by blocking the fallopian tubes
  • Locate an IUD (intrauterine device for birth control)
  • Remove adhesions (scars that bind affected tissue surfaces together in the abdomen or uterus) that have resulted from infections or previous surgeries

What can I expect during the procedure?

A hysteroscopy can be performed at our office in Encinitas, California. Dr. Lawrence Eisenhauer uses anesthesia or medication to help block out any pain or discomfort.* Your appointment will be scheduled when you are not experiencing a menstrual period. To make the procedure easier, the cervix is dilated and a speculum is used. The hysteroscope is then inserted through the cervix to the uterus. Next, the uterus is expanded with gas or fluid (saline) to help improve visibility. Using the hysteroscope’s images, the lining of the uterus and the opening of the fallopian tubes can be fully inspected.

You will be able to go home shortly after the procedure; if you receive general anesthesia, you may need to wait until its effects have worn off.* Mild cramping and 1-2 days of a slight bloody discharge may occur as a result of this procedure.* Medication can be prescribed to help with any pain you might experience.
