What causes infertility?
Infertility results from several different causes. Some couples suffer from ovulation issues, which means that the female either doesn’t release eggs or releases poor-quality eggs. Other couples suffer from infertility because of the woman’s endometriosis or because her fallopian tubes become blocked or damaged. Further, a male with low sperm count or poor-quality sperm may also prevent the couple from conceiving. And in further cases, a combination of the factors above leads to fertility issues.
How does Dr. Eisenhauer diagnose infertility?
If you and your partner have unsuccessfully tried to conceive for a year or more, infertility may be the issue. If you are 35 or above, 6 months is adequate. Dr. Lawrence Eisenhauer uses various tests to assess a woman’s fertility, including testing to check the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries. Remember, usually a semen analysis to assess male hormonal factors is necessary.
What treatments are available?
If abnormalities are discovered through testing, a specific treatment will be recommended based on the nature of the problem. For example, if Dr. Eisenhauer discovers that a patient isn’t ovulating properly, he recommends hormones to encourage a healthy ovulation. If the problem centers on the fallopian tubes, he recommends a procedure to correct the issue. In other cases, Dr. Eisenhauer recommends a combination of fertility treatments to increase the likelihood of conception. Regardless of the treatment, your individual infertility issues will always be assessed before a treatment is recommended. Sometimes referrals for more specialized treatments are necessary.
How successful is fertility treatment?
Depending on the nature of the issue, a fertility treatment can successfully help patients become parents.* However, in some cases, patients aren’t able to conceive without significant medical intervention.* In such cases, Dr. Eisenhauer recommends in vitro fertilization (IVF), which involves fertilizing an egg in a laboratory and placing the embryo in the woman’s uterus for implantation. In cases where the woman cannot sustain a pregnancy, surrogacy may be recommended.
